The Runner enters the galley from the ladder. She appears to have changed clothing, and looks quite comfortable, as though this were her home.

She sits at the table (where Pete expected her to). "So you're still interested in my offer? Let me explain it to you."

She presses a few buttons on a wall-mounted computer. The lights dim and a hologram forms on the table. While whe's doing tihs, she continues speaking. "This is a private matter. If any of you speaks about this to anyone aside from those in this room, I assure you that you won't live to regret it." Her tone is very matter-of-fact.

The hologram is a view of the solar system, as the party can immediately tell. They've seen these holograms a million times. "The Ralon family has been making a regular movement from Jupiter, " she says as the planet Jupiter lights up brightly, "to Mercury." The innermost planet lights up. A flight path from Jupiter to Mercury and a return path light up.

She turns from the computer to face the party. "I want to know what they're doing. Most of their business comes from the belt, but this is different. It's somehow connected to the Sun Kings of Mercury. By the damned moons, I can't understand why they'd be dealing with the likes of the Ralon family."

The hologram changes to that of a ship's technical readout. It's a meduim freighter. It's easy to see that it is heavily-armed, though. Its flag is Lunarian.

The Runner goes on, "This ship, the Winter Wind, makes the trip almost constantly. It lays over at an orbital station of Jupiter for a day or two, then moves to Mercury and lays over at a Mariposa for the same time. It turns around and heads directly back to Jupiter."

She turns off the hologram and the lights come back on. "I don't care how you find out," she says flatly. "I want to know what they're carrying, who they're dealing with, and who's paying. If you can, find out how I can hijack the operation at any point. It has to be worth big money."

She smiles and says, "You can get yourselves drinks if you'd like."

The galley is stocked for a space trip. It's stocked well, but it's not a great spread like Les Ralon had. There's basic synthetic juices and middle-of-the-road beer.

"We would need a ship. We haven't had much success obtaining one of our own." Pete admits, eyeing the interior of the Runner's ship. "And of course, we need to talk about money. This sounds dangerous, and it involves a doublecross. 5,000 credits per team member would be great, with 1,000 each up front. Alternatively, we'd love to have a ship that's got clean titles and licenses that we could permanently call our own."

The Runner's eyes light up. "Five thousand each, huh? That sounds like a deal." She extends her hand.

Pete can tell immediately that he grossly lowballed her. He could take her for far more money. How much more, he doesn't know. She just agreed too quickly...

The Runner thinks. She says, "Well... I could get you into a ship that's almost clean. She's a little beaten up, but she runs. The engines might need a little coaxing on the way, but she'll get you there. She's about 35 or 40 tons. That's great for you."

She brightens up. "That would help your disguise, too," she says. "I'll give you the ship, plus 5,000 each when you bring the information back." She looks very serious when she says, "If you don't come back, we'll come for the ship and take the interest out of your asses."

Pete still thinks he's lower than her original number, but he's not going to get much more from her right now.

"Sounds like a good enough deal," Pete says. "Certainly worth more than what Ralon was offering."
"By the way, on our way here, one of my teammates spotted someone following us," he says and gives a description. "Does he sound familiar?"

The Runner smiles broadly. She asks, "You know the game, don't you? I've got to find out who I'm dealing with. It could be fatal not to."

She extends her hand to shake with Pete. "The rocket," she says, "is in bay #16. It's unlocked. The access cards are on the control deck. They'll let you on without a fight. Find out what the Ralons are doing, how I can get a piece of that job, and I'll give you each 5,000 credits when you return."

"Well, it seems like a good deal to me," Pete says. "But we really need some starting cash. 1,000 creds each would really help. We're a bit under-equipped, especially when you're talking about this level of operation."
Whatever The Runners answer, Pete agrees to it, thanks her and the group picks up Bass and heads out to check the ship.

The Runner frowns at this suggestion. She says, "I'm giving you a ship. Isn't that enough? If you need help, let me know. I'm expecting you to handle this, though." She walks back to the ladder.

"Get me any information that you can," she says before she climbs down.

The airlock door is unlocked, and the short walk down the gangplank gives them plenty of time to pick out Bass waiting below.

Bay 16 is not too far away. As the group rounds the corner into the bay, they see what can only be described as a "hunk of junk." From the outside, there's no telling what condition the ship is in, or if it will even fly.

The hull paint is mostly gone, though the name still reads, "14 Bottles." Her flag is Lunar.

Pete does not notice anybody else in the bay.

Churchull's jaw drops at the sight of the badly-maintained rocket ship. "I guess I'll see what needs to be done to get this thing off the ground," he says.

As he walks up the gangplank, he lets out a big sigh. The airlock door opens easily at Churchill's command.

Pete and the rest of the team begin scouring the ship for anything interesting.
Pete spends his time looking for security systems and, most importantly, eavesdropping devices and unnecessary beacons.
Brok is told to focus on weapons systems.
Kent is asked to study the bridge and any needs it may require.
Coop is in charge of life support and medical facilities and supplies.
Churchill, of course, looks at the engine and structural integrity.
Bass is asked to scour the warehouse for anything useful, keep an eye out for intruders and other external issues.

Each member goes to their respective station.

Pete, specifically, finds very little in the way of security. In fact, he's not sure whether the airlock will lock properly. The electronics in the vessel are certainly adequate for the party, though. It seems as though the ship was once a pretty well-built machine, but it's been beaten up. However, he finds no evidence that he's being spied on.

Brok checks out the weaponry on the ship.

He calls back on the intercom, which works. He says, "There's a beam laser and two missle mounts. One of the mounts is heavy. It looks like we need ammo for the small mount, but there's plenty of ammo for the heavy mount."

Kent goes up to the bridge. After a minute or two, you can hear the life support kick on. He calls down on the intercom, saying, "This will work. It's not too fast, though. The computer shows some damage to the engines and sensors, but the controls self-check."

Doctor Coop

Coop ascends to the higher decks. a few minutes later he calls down and says, "There's no water." A second or two later, when the life support kicks on, he corrects that. He says, "No, there's water now. The quarters are dirty, but we can clean them up. There are no medical kits, so what I brought is all we have."

Churchill eagerly decends to the bottom deck. Almost immediately, you can hear him shout a curse. Soon, he says over the intercom, "This is horrible! The engine is a mess, and the tools are ancient! Aaarrgh! I have some work to do. Somebody please give me a hand if you have a chance."

Bass says outside. He notices that there are occasionally people passing the airlock and looking inside, completely innocently.

Near the launch bay, there's a crane, as well as some unlabelled crates.

If it is a private hangar, Bass will go investigate the crates.

With that, they spend the next day resupplying, cleaning and repairing everything they can afford to do.

The launch bay is not exactly private. It is rather like a publicly-available parking area. However, examining crates left near one's ship would certainly not attract attention.

The launch bay itself has one open doorway leading to it. So, it's conceivable that nobody would even notice, unless somebody happened to walk or drive by. This is possible. Again, those walking by would not care at all that you're looking at the crates.

With that said, Bass finds that the crate is full of some sort of ammunition. He's not the brightest, though. If called to look at the crates, Brok, Pete or Kent could tell that the crates are full of heavy missile mount ammunition. (Churchill, I assume, is too busy, while Coop would have no idea what he's looking at.)

The crane will have to be used to load the crates onboard the 14 Bottles. We can make this easy, but you'll have to tell me who will work the crane. There is, as with anything, a slight chance of an accident or error.

Anyone can try, but you can probably guess who'll be more familiar with it.

Once the prelimary repairs are finished and everything else is loaded, Sneaky Pete comes out to identify the ammo in the crates.
Assuming its something we can use, Pete opts to requitistion it and calls Kent to help operate the crane.
From there we call ground control and schedule a launch ASAP.
Feel free to launch us and get us going toward our current mini-mission. Boy, sometime we might get to the asteroid!

Pete calls over to Kent to start the crane. "Ahhh, the day is looking good," thinks Pete. "How sweet it is to own a ship. The missiles will fit nicely into the missile mount," he relects.

Pete's eyes widen. "I hope he knows how to use that thing," he thinks. The crate moves closer to the ship. "That doesn't look safe."

Pete begins to back up. The crate swings now, as though an angle or power setting was miscalculated.

"MY DEAR LORD!!!" cries Pete as he runs away from the wildly-swinging crate of ammunition.

A few moments later, after all settled, Pete finds that most of the contents of the crate land inside the cargo hold, while the rest lay on the launch pad below.

Brok leans out from the cargo hold. He seems to be getting up from a prone position. "Hey! Take it easy!" he shouts.

A few hours pass as Kent cleans up the stray missiles as best he can. Churchill spends the time in the engine compartment with Brok holding parts, handling tools, and sometimes just calming the engineer down.

On board the 14 Bottles, Kent makes his final radio call to the tower regarding the launch. The port isn't busy at the moment, so it's going very quickly.

"14 Bottles, ready to launch in 3... 2..." The engines fire as Pete hastily buckles his safety harness. "1..."

After a few minutes of the nearly-deafening roar of the nuclear engines, Kent says into the intercom, "We're under way. Where are we going, anyway? The Runner mentioned Jupiter and Mercury. I told control we were heading toward Jupiter, but they won't care once we're clear of their space."

Where should Kent fly the ship?
